Overview
What is IVF?
In vitro fertilisation (IVF) brings eggs and sperm together in the laboratory, then places a healthy embryo in the uterus. It is the most effective fertility treatment for many couples and is often the right step when others have not worked.
Every cycle is planned around your assessment, monitored closely and explained as you go. We are honest about your chances from the start, because realistic expectations matter as much as good care.
Benefits
- A protocol built around your results
- Close monitoring with scans and blood tests
- ICSI available where sperm quality needs it
- Embryo freezing for future transfers
- One team with you from stimulation to pregnancy test
Is it right for you?
Often a good fit for
- Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- Significant sperm concerns
- Endometriosis or low ovarian reserve
- Unexplained infertility after other treatments
We may advise waiting, or another option, with
- Every plan starts with a full assessment for both partners, which decides whether IVF is your best option
Suitability is always confirmed in person, at your consultation.
How it works
01
Stimulation
About 10 – 12 days of hormone injections to grow several eggs, with scans to monitor progress.
02
Egg retrieval
A short procedure under sedation collects the eggs. Sperm is collected on the same day.
03
Fertilisation
Eggs and sperm are combined in the laboratory, by IVF or ICSI, and embryos are watched as they develop.
04
Transfer
A healthy embryo is placed in the uterus with a soft catheter. Any good extra embryos can be frozen.
Before and after
Before your visit
- Complete the assessment for both partners
- Start folic acid, and stop smoking and alcohol
- Keep a list of all medicines and supplements
Aftercare
- Rest for the remainder of the retrieval day
- Continue progesterone support as prescribed
- Call us at once if you have severe pain, bloating or breathlessness
Possible side effects
- Bloating and discomfort during stimulation
- Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which we monitor for closely
- A higher chance of twins if more than one embryo is transferred
- Small risks from the retrieval procedure, such as bleeding or infection
Every risk is explained before you decide. Results vary from person to person.
IVF: your questions
What are the chances of success?
It depends mainly on age, egg reserve and the cause of infertility. We give you an honest estimate after your assessment. No clinic can guarantee a pregnancy.
Is egg retrieval painful?
It is done under sedation, so you should not feel the procedure. Mild cramping afterwards is common.
What is ICSI?
A single sperm is injected directly into each egg. It is used when sperm count or movement is low, or fertilisation failed before.
